With every passing day the African Man knows less and less about who he is, his roots, where he came from, and where he should go. You cannot blame him, it is not his fault, he was torn at a tender age from his mother’s breast and forced into civilisation. He was forced to achieve in a century what the West achieved in a millennium. He is suffering from a Colonial side effect, even though he won his independence.
He is slowly losing the symbols of his culture, symbols that remind him who he is, symbols that kept his community strong and powerful in the days of his fore fathers. He was abducted from his hunting grounds in the valleys of the mighty rivers, and thrown into a concrete jungle. He now plays a game the rules of which he knows not.
He cannot go back to the spear, nor can he go back to the hoe, they have changed forms. The African man must now learn the art of tilling this concrete terrain.
There is one important cultural symbol defining us as a people which is being neglected. In the past people lived communally and the elders were responsible for educating the young. Since they lived in a classless society, knowledge and wisdom were distributed equally to all the young as they were growing.
Flash forward to present day, those who are privileged enough to afford a good education and have access to libraries and the internet are the only ones who are learning the rules of the game. Those who do not are left to artless and tactless means of surviving. They are struggling, forced to live under the boot of those in the know.
Society is forgetting this rich piece of wisdom from our ancestors, a code which they lived by, which says, “It takes a community to raise a child.” The African Man has forgotten who he is and he is leaving the old ways for the new without thinking about the repercussions, the personal financial, social and political failure. In the midst of the confusion, Shuva is born, for the seed of every success is ‘desire’, “Budiriro inotangira mukushuva”.
Industrious to the bone, we are like ants building castles of such grand scale but with no architectural design. While such a feat might be considered amazing for puny insects, its not exactly so for humans. Industrious to the bone, with our muscles and our sweat, we do bring down mountains, but it’s not much help without a creative plan that will sustain our future.
Our society is too full of too many people pursuing the same ideas and business models, most of which have no future sustenance. There is an unhealthy increase of vegetable stalls, phone chargers and earphone pedlars, chicken businesses, there is more than seven pre-schools in my street alone. To name but a few.
Shuva is here to educate and to nurture intuitive desire, knowledge is our merchandise and wisdom our raw material. We are here to teach the rules of the game, to teach people to think, to help them uphold the higher values in life and guide them toward life success. Fulfilling the role of the elders, pointing out who we are, upholding our values.
Catch them young and watch them grow. Our primary focus will be on the Youth, for the Youth are the backbone of society, the Youth are the future. And also because you will not always succeed in teaching old dogs new tricks. That means the Adults are our secondary focus, Corporations our tertiary.
Shuva will translate audio motivational books into the vernacular to make the life skills and principles they contain more palatable. These will also be available on video. We will host Self Improvement seminars and run short courses. We will set up Information Centres, Libraries and Study Centres in the high density areas and small towns.
Shuva will incorporate the Arts in its endeavours, that is, Animation, Cartoons, Fine Art, Theatre, Film and Music. We will also engage corporations to push forward this new way of thinking. Shuva design mobile device apps and games that help increase knowledge.
We will put up a cultural website which will be an information hub. The pool of ideas and projects is still growing. Together we can make this happen.
Capacity Building, Self Improvement, Purpose Finding and Alignment, Financial Education and Leadership; these will be our main areas of focus targeted at mostly the youth. An educational philosophy custom made for someone growing up in the African Continent, to help them cope with the ever changing world without losing track of who they are. For who you are and where you are coming from plays an important part in where you should go.
